Abingdon and the First World War
Those Who Served
The area to the West of the town centre included the long continuation of the High Street called Ock Street which also eventually became the Marcham Road. On either side there were areas of great contrast, from the crowded, slum-dwelling "Courts" which opened onto Ock Street, to the new middle class housing of Exbourne Road and Spring Road, to the grander houses like The Firs on Marcham Road, home of the Challenor family, multi-generational solicitors of the town.
For detailed information about the houses and streets go to the AAAHS Buildings and People website.
The family names below are associated with Ock Street or Marcham Road, either because we have a home address for a branch of the family in one of these streets, or because we believe they worked at an address in this area. Click on any name to find out more.
